What you were doing before you decided to become an IAWP Wellness Coach?
I was a mental health counselor working with adolescents and adults dealing primarily with issues of depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and trauma.
Why did you decide to become a Wellness Coach?
I decided to become a wellness coach for both professional and personal reasons. Being a mental health therapist, I have always had a strong desire to help others. But I have felt there has long been a piece missing.
So many of my clients struggle with depression and anxiety that while it does improve with therapy and medication, there seemed to be a disconnect between physical and mental health. Through the IAWP, I was able to really learn ow the things people eat, the quality of their sleep, and the levels of stress in their lives have a major impact on both their physical and mental health.
I was personally drawn to become a wellness coach after experiencing my own struggles with my health. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder in 2010 and since that time, I have read virtually every health and nutrition book I could get my hands on to try to understand and improve my health.
I came across the IAWP during this process and finally feel like I found the community and support I was looking for, not only for my own health, but also for the clients I see. I am excited to share my newfound knowledge with others!
How has being a student at the IAWP helped you?
I have found such a wonderful community of like-minded, health conscious individuals that share a passion to help others create and maintain healthy lifestyles. Listening to Suzanne and the other wellness experts speak and impart their knowledge and experience has been invaluable and though I am continuing to learn, I now feel I have the information and confidence to move forward in such an exciting field!
Becoming a wellness coach has significantly expanded my knowledge and success as a mental health counselor. I have seen dramatic improvements in mood and lessened anxiety once we worked on specific ways to improve their sleep and talked about how specific foods can improve their digestion and their overall physical and mental health. I have seen such amazing improvements in my clients’ outlooks since incorporating what I have learned though the IAWP.
I want to continue this success and share my knowledge. I hope to open my own wellness coaching practice in the future and eventually expand to provide a variety of wellness services to include wellness coaching, nutrition education, yoga and Pilates, classes, stress management skills, mindfulness, massage therapy, and chiropractic services. I never could have imagined this dream prior to joining the IAWP!
